The Beatles Legend ～ブライアン・エプスタインの影響

中学生の頃からよく聞いていたビートルズ。でも、実はその歌詞の意味はよく知りません。そこで、ビートルズの楽曲をテーマに、マイク先生(ETCマンツーマン英会話)のレッスンを受けてみることにしました。
ビートルズは、1962年10月レコードデビューし、1970年4月解散するまで、様々な変化を遂げているそうです。その中でも1966年11月において最も大きな変化が起こったとのこと。ブライアン・エプスタイン(Brian Samuel Epstein)がビートルズのマネジメントを行うようになったことも、ビートルズに大切な変化をもたらしました。さて、それはどのようなものだったのでしょうか。

The Beatles went through many changes. OK? And especially after 1966 in the winter, from the winter 1966, the Beatles made big changes, very important changes. Now, so, I have all the Beatles albums, OK? I have one copy of, two White albums and two Let it be albums and two… Anyway, I have one copy of every album. And if you study the Beatles which I have, that’s to study every single song. And by the way, the Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, had two other groups before they made the Beatles. And First, let’s see, the second group was called “Johnny & the Moondogs”. And the first group was called, I forgot, right now my brain isn’t working. But John Lennon and Paul McCartney, they made two groups and they were not making any money. They didn’t make any money until Brian Epstein came into the picture. He turned them into suits and ties and the Beatles hair cut. All right, that was 1964. Anyway if you read each song, then you come to 1966, then after that point, you notice, you will notice that the lyrics change very… before 1966 and November, October and November, they, the Beatles played other artists’ music sometimes. They played Chuck Berry. They played some other, I forgot his name、Buddy Holly, OK? And they wrote some of their own songs. That’s right. That’s right. But they really didn’t have confidence until Brian Epstein came into the picture.
Q: Who?
Brian Epstein. we say Epstein, the British say Epstein. He became their first real manager. He brought them stardom. He put them in suites and ties. He told them to cut their hair a certain way, to dress a certain way. And see, he was, Epstein was brilliant, because it was his marketing scheme. He knew how to make them palatable to the public. Because before Epstein, they wore leather jackets, all leather. And they had a biker image. He knew the public would not go for that at that time. So he put them in white shirts, black suits. And that was brilliant.

パウシュの子どもの頃の夢の一つは「無重力を体験」することでした。やがて、宇宙飛行士が無重力状態に慣れるための航空機がNASAにあることを知ります。画期的な装置で、放物線上の経路をたどり、一番高いところで25秒間、機内はほぼ無常力に等しい状態になるそうです。しかし、問題は無重力状態が終わった後、機内の重力が元に戻るときは、体重が二倍に感じ、お尻を床に思いっきり叩きつけることになります。その時の体験を、こんな表現で語っていました。

丸山様:「ありがとうございます。学資金はレッスン料として有効に活用させていただきます。」
ETC:「英会話を習おうと思ったきっかけについて少しお聞かせいただけますか？」
丸山様:「仕事で必要でした。顧客とのメールや電話対応、資料作成、英論文や参考書を読んでの情報取得などです。それと私の勤務する職場は以前までは日本人を取引先や顧客としていれば仕事がある程度成立していましたが、最近は東アジア・ヨーロッパなどの海外との取引が増えてきました。そこで思ったのですが、他の国々のエンジニアの皆さんは殆どの人が英語がとても堪能なんですよ。
そして、『あなたも当然英語くらい話せるんだろ？』、『なんで日本人は英語も話せないやつがエンジニアやってるんだ？』と平然と言ってきます。このままではマズイな．．．、英語を覚えたい！
喋りたい！と思ったのがきっかけです。」
ETC:「どのような経緯でETCのプライベートレッスンをお選びいただけましたか？」
丸山様:「マンンツーマン形式で落ち着いた環境で英会話を習いたいと考えました。特にカフェ等ではなく先生宅で学べるところに魅力を感じました。」
ETC:「日吉のメアリー先生は生徒さんから見てどんな方ですか？」
丸山様:「一言で言いますと、先生＆母親のような存在です。尊敬していますので長いお付き合いをしたいですね。」
ETC:「現在のレッスンで気に入っている点と不満点、ご要望などあればお聞かせください。」
丸山様:「気に入っている点は先生宅で学べる落ち着いた環境です。不満点は現在特にありません。今後の要望としてはレッスン継続3年とか5年とかで記念品贈呈やレッスン料サービスなんてあるといいですね。」

It was strange English. “Please come in freely.” Freely? There’s many
interesting English.
Q If we say like that, what is the meaning?
Probably most native speakers are… “please go in freely” means,
maybe like naked? “Freely?”, we imagine. Probably that’s the first
thing will. Popping down. “Please go in freely”. Wow! I see. Because
there the way of saying, “please feel free to go in.” “Please feel
free.” Yeah. Please go in freely sounds weird, yeah, but it’s
interesting.
Q: What is the best way to learn those things not to make those kind
of mistakes?
Maybe learn from mistakes. Maybe it’s the best way because if we make
mistakes, we don’t want to make same mistake over and over again. I
make same mistakes over and over again myself, but maybe try and
error? Maybe it’s the best way, I guess.

英会話教室で英語を学んだつもりでいても、いざ外国に行くと、まだまだ力不足を感じてしまいます。実践的な英語を学ぶために、マイク先生からこんな勉強方を教えていただきました。

I have a lot of students who had to travel overseas on business. And they had to go to conferences, and they had to go to sales meetings. All kind of people, doctors and dentists and sales people and other kinds of Japanese business people, And I told them “hey, you take a IC recorder, and when you get off the plane in America, you turn it on. And you record everything, the taxi drivers, the hotel staffs, the restaurant chefs. You record everything. That’s real English. You can’t find it in a textbook.
And go to the conference, and put it in your coat! Don’t tell anybody! I don’t care about your company secrets. I don’t want to know. It’s not my business. After the conference, go to your hotel room. Laid down, turn it on, and review. That’s it. You do that, you are going to improve English much faster than just studying with the textbooks. And believe me! People who had done it is so happy, because it’s like “wow! I went from here to here. I went from this level to this level. I can really understand English. “ They were so happy.
And they are still making mistakes when they speak. They are still making grammatical mistakes, because we are not focusing so much on a grammar. These kinds of business people, they don’t have time to study the grammar. They do it only for the work. OK? They are not going to the university and not going back. No. It’s survival. They have to learn English to keep their job and get promotion usually. So that technique is really effective, using IC.

When I learned English, I also learned Greek and Latin at the same class. OK. Let’s take here you have “dent”, means, “tooth”. So you have “dentist”. “ist” is a teacher. “ist” is a doctor. “Dentist”. “Dentist”. “Tooth”.
OK. If you take “mar”, “mar” means “sea”. So you have “submarine”,“underwater”. You have “mater”, “maternity”, “mother”. Then you have “mine”, “minimum”. These are all Latin. If you take “ped”, “ped” means, “foot”. So you have “peddle”. “Spectre” means to see or to look, so “inspect”. “Volve”, we have “revolve”, turning around. You have “in”, “im”, “il”, “ir”, “un”. It means “no”. So you have “convenient”, “inconvenient”. antonym. “Im”. “Possible” and “impossible”, not possible. “Ir”. “Regal” and “irregular”. “Ir” “regular”, “irregular”, not regular. “Interesting” and “uninteresting”, ”un”. So if you know some of these, English is very easy. All Romans languages come through Latin and Greek. So if you know certain Latin and Greek, you can speak German, French, Latin.

I don’t understand, because in Australia, in school, all students, all schools, they teach like this, in America they don’t. I don’t know why. But having this, it’s easy to, if I see the words, I can guess, also for spelling and for pronunciation. And in engineering or science, we use a lot of Latin.

Translation is not just a question of language at all! Language is ONE part of translation. But there are many things to think about. It’s not just word ‘A’ equals word ‘A’ in the second language. That’s the lowest level of translation. It’s necessary. It’s not a negative comment. It’s just saying it’s an essential step, like a child learns how to walk to take the first step. That step is, maybe, this equals this. Maybe, it’s a foundation. And after that, now I am discussing something very far beyond the first step. This is, maybe, the final step, where you realize you are taking all these word ‘A’ in language No.1 equals word ‘A’ in language No.2. And You’ve done a lot. And then you come up these examples in some contexts, in this case manga, and this context, this situation between characters and this scene and this feeling. And then here is the word, this シーン word. And suddenly you realized that you are facing a challenge that you don’t have the skill, maybe nobody does.
Again, if we just change perspective, who cares? Some people are going to say that. You are just worrying about something that’s not important. Or you just forget about it. Cut it, and go to the next word. I can’t respond to those people! For me, those kinds of things are very important in my life as a translator or as someone who enjoys that. I consider manga is an art. It is popular, but it is also combines very skillful the balance [between art and popular culture]. Anyway I don’t want to be the person to cut that. I want to be the person who protects that. If the translator is doing something they believe is good. I believe this is good. Whatever it is, an idea, an essay, a work of art, a manga.
But you feel like, if this is in English, then the world is going to be better place! Really. It sounds silly. But it’s true. But that’s a good feeling! And you work better. You work improves, and the result is better, and you feel good. You don’t feel like I did a translation which makes the world actually worse. No, it exists! All those things can challenge the translator to, of course, you are covering the essential things, right? We say this in Japanese. I can’t say this in English. You’ve got the basics covered. Then you can really spend time worrying about, not worrying, but enjoying the wonderful dilemma, the wonderful confusion. Should I choose this? Should I choose this? It becomes really fun!
And then, you can, like today we were talking about just one word, this シーン sound, or feeling, or sound/feeling. Sure! And you realize it’s not only about language, it’s about psychology, it’s about culture, it’s about even actually, architecture, it involves how we build things. Aesthetics, right? 美学. It involves many things. So maybe the translator needs those skills in order to make a good version of a work into their native language. It i

But there was one example, OK, from all of those words, that was a difficult example, which is, there was one scene, and the characters who were talking, and it was just a normal, I think it was in an apartment somewhere in Tokyo, maybe not so different from my apartment. Two characters were talking, a boy and girl, and they were having, not an argument, but like a lovers’ disagreement, a quarrel, we say, about something. And they were talking, not arguing, but just talking. And maybe they had, they decided to, not separate, but their relationship wasn’t going so well. So there was some conflict, OK? And then one of the characters leaves the room, and then one character is by himself. And we have the sound. There was the introduced sound, the sound word that was introduced. So he is alone in the room. And there is しーん sound in Japanese.
I had heard that sound in conversation before, maybe in Japanese. But, I have never been asked to translate it. This was my job. So I had to think about this. This was maybe primary example, that gave me, an insight into the differences between how we consider the sound words in English and then the separation of sound words into 擬音語 and 擬態語 in Japanese. So there is a sound, here, in this scene. But the question is: WHERE is that sound? And that is the point that I, you know, want to talk about, WHERE IS THAT SOUND. So the sound is, it’s everywhere in that scene, and its nowhere in that scene. It’s both outside of his body, in the room, and it’s inside him. So it’s physically, it’s the sound of silence. It sounds like Simon and Garfunkel song! The sound of silence. But psychologically or emotionally, it represents solitude, loneliness, isolation, maybe. Not so strongly, but there is a hint of those things in the sound.
I don’t know of a way or a word or…I don’t know that word in English. And I know a lot of words in English. But I don’t know. I am not saying that word doesn’t exist. It might exist. But as a sound word, right, so you express “the sound of no sound”, which is a lonely feeling sound, with a word that is a sound word. Is that OK? It’s kind of complicated. So you make clear what is not clear. You know it like umm, it’s difficult to say…It’s like taking — it’s not good example — but it’s like taking a glass of water, you don’t see the water, really. But if you put in some dye or some color, then you can maybe see. Something like that! You are making it visible, or perceptible, or something.
So anyway that was a big challenge for me. And then I realized that I should probably NOT do this job as a professional. I could DO it. They gave me the work, and I could finish my work, I could be…I could do the job, it was so difficult for me. I enjoy it. It’s extremely enjoyable. But not as something…I don’t want to make those decisions! We have to keep these sound words, let’s cut this sound word. I think if we, if you are making those kind of decision especially with manga, again, I like manga, but I just have very normal level of knowledge and a very normal level of manga admiration. I am just very general reader. But I think if you are translating those words in English, or if you even making editorial decisions, or translation decisions — let’s keep this, let’s cut this, let’s change this — I think you are losing a lot of original beauty of manga, actually. So, I would actually recommend to a Western fan of manga, they have to learn Japanese. Otherwise they are not really reading it, or they are not really understanding it, if it is translated. For other kinds of literature I think, maybe quite different. Anyway that genre, manga, has strong representation of those sound words.
Q: How did you translate しーん?
I didn’t! That’s the word, what can I say, that “broke” me. I was defeated by that word actually.
Q: In the American issue, there is no sound?
There is no sound. We didn’t do anything!

These are the sound words. A sound word itself — the phrase “sound word” — is very simple way of saying it. But it’s a general way, so it’s safe way, it’s an easy way, to talk about these words. The correct word is in English is “onomatopoeia”. It’s very long. Yes, onomatopoeia.
And that means…the same, it’s, OK, “sound words”. In Japanese you divide that into 2 categories: 擬音語 and 擬態語, right? There are words in English, that have both meanings, 擬音語 and 擬態語, but they are extremely, extremely specialized words. So you know, if we say the general, maybe it’s difficult again to say, but I guess if you have a college, let’s say, we have a college education in Japan, you know, you know what is 擬音語, 擬態語, or you should, right? In America, if you have a college education, or a good high education, you know what is an onomatopoeia. It’s sound word. You know that word. But you don’t know, or you don’t differentiate between 擬音語 and 擬態語. It’s not considered…the level of basic knowledge regarding sound words, you can say in Japan, even at a general level of knowledge, the average college graduate, we know what is the category of word, and what is this category. In America we just say, OK, it’s a sound word. It’s generalized into one thing. So that was, I think, one of the [main] points.
So, yes. This category of sound words in Japanese is actually a major category. You know. If someone want to master Japanese, they need to become really serious about that. They do! You know. If you take the 日本語能力試験 right, there is a category of sound words. Sure, sure. Just like, you know, you have a grammar section, you have a vocabulary section, there’s, I think, a 四字熟語 section as well, of course, and then there will be a small part of a lot of those [sound] words, on it, and I think the reason is obvious, because they are a such big part of Japanese language.
There are some differences between them…there are a lot of differences. We can say basically: the frequency, how many times we use this word, it is just a lot in Japanese. Also the age range of people who use them, these words are used by even, you know, people, young, infants learning to speak Japanese, very young children, until even adults. These are used by everyone.
Maybe in America, sound words, the older we get, the less we use them. They are not considered only for young people, but you know, a lot of the words we would use the sound words to describe when we are speaking Japanese, we wouldn’t use the sound in English. We would just say what happened, right?

ビートルズの都市伝説。今日はブライアン・エプスタインの死についてです。

And Just to make it more interesting, guess what! Brian Epstein died one year after Paul McCartney died. Wow! Isn’t that a coincidence? Gee. Brian Epstein was gay. He was a frown boy and gay guy. At that time, it was not cool to be gay. In the 1960s, you didn’t come out and say that I am gay. No. You kept it the secret to yourself. And guess what! It’s said that Brian Epstein died from a sleeping pills overdose. Gee. Just like Marilyn Monroe, just like Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, and just like Jim Morrison of the Doors. Gee. They all take sleeping pills and kill themselves, when they were millionaires.
So we never, me and my friends, no, we don’t believe Brian Epstein killed himself. Why would you kill yourself. Brian Epstein was a millionaire before he met the Beatles. Brian Epstein’s parents were a major furniture manufacture entity in England. He was like a BOCHAN. He was a rich boy. The Beatles were just a game for him. He didn’t have to work. And Brian Epstein was a very educated man. So it doesn’t make any sense. Why would you kill yourself? OK?
OK. So, who would make all money after Paul McCartney dead, let’s kill his manager, get him out of the way. Now the lawyer for the record company and the record company, they were making all money. And remember! John, John Lennon and Paul, Paul McCartney, they couldn’t even control their copyrights. Because when they entered into the agreement with Capital records, they had to sign another part of the contract that said, but you can’t sell your songs to anybody as you my wish. No, because we are partial party to your copyrights. So John Lennon hated that.
So, who’s gonna stick up for Paul McCartney. Paul McCartney was single. He had no wife. Get out of the picture! Here is what probably happened. Brian Epstein and Lennon, “Listen! Don’t tell anybody what happened. You found the stand-in. We find somebody that looks enough like Paul. Then we can put him on the albums, good enough face. We can have him play minor parts. We will never go in the concert again. So nobody will be able to see us. They won’t be able to hear it for and see his hands and all the distinguished mark. In the public, we will put it on the albums and 大丈夫. Cosmetic surgery, we can do it. And that’s what they did.

Q: お生まれはどちらですか？
アメリカ、ニュージャージー州で生まれ、日本から贈られた美しいサクラがホワイトハウス周辺で咲くワシントンDCで育ちました。ワシントンの大学に通った後、来日する1991年迄米国でコンサルティング業を営んでいました。日本に来てから21年になります。
I was born in New Jersey, United States and grew up in Washington D.C., which has a beautiful cherry tree gift from Japan around the White House. I went to university in Washington and I had my own consulting business in the United States until 1991, which is when I came to Japan. I have been here going on 21 years now.
Q: 日本にいらっしゃったきっかけを教えていただけますか？
日本の文部省に招かれ、仙台市の小学校、中学校、高校で1年間教えていました。仙台には沢山の友人がいますが、震災の影響で今も厳しい日々を送っています。仙台が復興することを心から祈っています。その後、東京に来てこの場所で20年間暮らしています。この20年間は英語教師の仕事を専門にしています。
I was invited as a guest of Japan of Monbusho, the Education Ministry. So I was teaching in Sendai. I spent one year teaching in a elementary school, junior high school and high school in Sendai city. I have many friends in Sendai who are still in a very hard time because of tsunami disaster. So we hope Sendai can recover. Then I came down to Tokyo, where I have been for the last 20 years. So my teaching experience, it is 20 years of inclusive experience.

私は50から60の様々な目的別コースを提供することができますが、生徒さんによっては仕事に関連した教材や個人的な興味に関連した素材を持参される方もいらっしゃいます。もちろん、それでもかまいません。私が大切にしているのは、生徒さんの意向に応えること。生徒さんの英語力が上達向上し、自らの目的を実現して欲しいのです。そのお手伝いをするのが私の役目です。「教育とは人々から最高の能力を引き出すこと」と言われています。これこそが、私がレッスンを通して実現しようとしていることです。
I have over 50 or 60 different specific courses that I can suggest to students. Some students bring their own material from their company or from the personal interest. That is fine too. My focus is student oriented. So I want the students to improve and to realize their goals. I am here to facilitate that. What they say is “teaching is really bringing out the best in other people”. And that is what I am here trying to do.
Q:20年間日本にいらっしゃって最近の変化をどのように捉えていますか？
日本企業は様々な理由から日々国際化されてきています。欧米人やアジアの人々と一緒に働くようになるなど、日本人を取り巻く環境がより多文化になっていることにも気づいているかもしれません。

I think a lot of people have put an overvalue on Internet. You are not going to find or become a fluent English speaker using Internet. It is easy and convenient. It may be free. But it is too low level and too broad-based. There is no substitute for good learning. If you want to improve, you have to put the time in. If you want to shape up, you have to join the gym, do some exercise. If you want to lose weight, you have to change your diet. Learning a language can be a lot of fun, but it is not magic. It is not easy. You have to put the time in.

良い本を沢山読むことで、良い書き方というものを自然に理解できるようになるでしょう。長年良書として知られている、スタインベック、ヘミングウェイやディケンズの作品などを読むと、良い書き方というものが理解できるでしょう。良い文章がかけるようになるには、良い読者になることが最も良い方法なのです。本当に良い文学作品を読むことで、良い作家の書き方のセンスが理解できるようになり、どのような書き方が効果的で、どのような書き方が効果的でないかがわかるようになってくるでしょう。
If you read a lot, if you read good books, naturally you can understand good writing, anything that you know classic books, anything that well written like Steinbeck, Hemingway, or Dickens. The best way is to become a good writer is to become a good reader. So if you read really good literature, you can understand the style sense of good writers and it becomes easier to understand what might work and what might not.

Well, you see, in this case you just picked up “look at you ”. But you have to have the phrase after that.
Q: She looks so busy.
Yeah she was busy making the cookies, right, in the kitchen. And then he came in. So and it’s Christmas Eve, that day. And so he says, “Look at you! Working in the kitchen” or he said something, right. That means it’s kind of pitying that person. And in that case, you kind of, not negative, but say, “hey, look at you! You are working on Christmas Eve. Oh, my god”, you know. He’s pitying her, and says “look at you”.
But usually when we say, “look at you”, it’s a kind of phrase showing an expression of surprise sometimes. If you are not dressed very well, or you look very tired after hard work, then you say “look at you! You must have been working very hard”.
Q: Only such negative situation?
Rather, rather negative, yeah. But, I’ve noticed sometimes “Oh, look at you! You are wearing a beautiful dress” means “Oh, how gorgeous you look. You are completely different. “You look very nice”. That means well you are saying “look at you” meaning you want people to look at her.
Yeah, but in the subtitle in the movie, there was no translation. So if you have a phrase after that, I don’t think you have to make a direct translation. But it means “oh, my god. What happened to you?”
Well, its phrase, which is often used to show your expression. In Japanese, in the dictionary says, “目の前の行動、状態を非難して、「なんだ君、これは。ひどいじゃない」
But on the other hands, in the dictionary says negative, but I’ve heard sometimes “look at you” showing surprise that you look more different than usual.

“Kind of ” is very vague. And it’d used in many ways like the Japanese word “まあね、とか”～の様な”. It’s a very simple phrase that we use in conversation to show your feelings, your mode.
Q; What kind of feelings or mode are they?
Well, just simply, “kind of” –
Q: To try to make things vague?
Yeah. To make it vague, not giving a straight answer or sometimes it’s used like “rather”. “I’m rather in a hurry.” Yeah. But “kind of “ is very vague and we use it like “he seemed kind of shocked.” “なんとなく、なんとなくそう見えた” “kind of shocked”
Q: What is the difference between “I’m in kind of a hurry” and “I’m in a hurry” ?
“I’m in a hurry” is a straight sentence, right? “I’m in a hurry”, that’s definite. “I’m in a hurry, I’m rushing”. But if you say “ I’m in kind of a hurry” means,–
Q: Just to avoid to say something straight?
Yeah, that’s right. Not saying “I’m in a hurry” definitely, not giving a definite answer, but saying, “I think I am in a hurry”, kind of thing. “Kind of thing” “のような”. So I usually when I give a sentence and I, yeah, make a phrase or something like this. “It means like this” or “kind of”.
Q: So in this scene, Howard says to the police officer. So maybe he makes a straight comment to the police officer?
Well, I think he can’t, because you know he was over speeding. And the policeman on the motor bike came after him and stopped him. So he cannot say, “I am in a hurry”, because he did over speed. So then he wants to make an excuse. So he says “oh, I’m in kind of a hurry.” Or, I don’t know, but in this phrase, “I’m in kind of a hurry”, when he talks, when Howard says to the police officer, I think he means that he wants to say “ ちょっと急いでいるんだけど、みたいな”.
Q: Try to express –
Yeah, try to express or he wants the police officer to feel sympathy to him, yeah, he is trying to make an excuse.

In this case, she is talking about experience. I have not been shopping means… yeah the meaning is different. “I have never been shopping” is experience. So she said she never went shopping with her mother. Morgan too. I think the parents are divorced, right? Divorced or something. So she never went to shopping too. She never had an experience. But if you say, “I haven’t been shopping”, that means you haven’t gone yet to shopping. Soon the past which is not finished yet. So when you use yet or already, we use. We called this 現在完了形.
