マンツーマン英会話ワンポイント・レッスン～”I tell you what.”の意味を教えて下さい。
“I tell you what.”とは、どのような意味なのでしょうか。
“I’ll tell you what ( I think / I suggest )”を短くした形です。日本語で言うと、「さあ、こうしよう」とか「まず、こうしてみよう」という意味に近いと思います。提案や提言などを言う場合に使われます。
たとえば次のように使います。
I’ll tell you what (I suggest).
Let’s (or “How about we…”) go have lunch and while we eat we can decide what movie to see.
(こうしよう。まず昼食に行って食べながらどの映画をみるか決めればいい。)

Dr. Ray Langston

I tell you what. Let’s take care of the call out first. Than after the shift. Hey, I will come back out here with you, we’ll pass out some pictures together. Okay?
(こうしよう。まず臨場要請に応える。そしてシフトが終わったら俺も一緒に写真を配る。)
Dr. Ray Langston
Okay.
(わかった。)
また、”I tell you what.”の後に、仮説を言う場合もあります。二人の刑事が、なぜこの事件が起こったのかを話し合っているとします。「もしかしたら、こういうことではないだろうか」、と仮説を言うときに使うのです。
I tell you what. Maybe this happened and then this happened and then this happened.
(こういう仮説はどうだろう。こうして、こうして、こうなった。(どう思う？))
