母音の使い分けが少ないスコットランド英語～『Burnistoun』で笑いながらマンツーマン英会話(1)
スコットランド英語は、二重母音は単母音のように発音してしまうようです。これはスコッツ語の影響もありそうです。
たとえば、番組タイトルの”Burnistoun”は、このコメディに登場する架空の町。toun はスコッツ語で、英語のtown。発音も、
”toun” /tun/
となります。 ここでも、”town”/tɑʊn/の二重母音が、短母音に変わってしまったようですね。
また、スコットランド英語では、イギリス英語ほど厳密に母音を使い分けません。
下の動画の”eleven”の発音は、
”eleven” /ɪlevən/
日本語の場合は、i-le-bun(イレブン)のように、「い」「え」「う」とうい全く異なった三つの母音となります。英語の場合は、e-(l)e-(v)e-nで、綴りは同じ「e」なのに、これを異なった三つの母音で発音しなければなりません。コメディですから、強調はあると思いますが、もともと母音を混合して使いがちなスコットランド人にとっては、不得意な発音の一つなのかもしれません。

イングランド・アクセントで喋るときに、咳払いをしてちょっと気取った表情になるところが興味深いです。
『Parliamo Glasgow』を見たときにも思いましたが、スコットランド人はどうしてこうも自分達の訛りネタが好きなのでしょう。自分達のアクセントがいかに他では通じないかということを、自虐的に楽しんでいるようにも見えます。でも、その一方で、「これは訛りなどではなく、一個の独立した言語なのだ」、と開き直り、いや胸をはり、気持ちを高揚させている、というような根源的なものを感じてしまいます。
最後のに二人が大声で叫ぶのは、映画『ブレイブハート(BRAVEHEART)』（95年、米）で、メルギブソン演じたウィリアム・ウォレスが絶命する時に「FREEDOM!」と叫ぶシーンのパロディーですね。
