Jane Goodall says ‘disrespect for animals’ caused pandemic.
　（ジェーン・グドール氏が言及「コロナパンデミックの原因は『動物の軽視』」

　霊長類学者（primatologist）ジェーン・グドール氏のこの発言が話題を呼んでいます。

　「チンパンジーと人間のDNA構造の違いがわずか2％にも満たない」「チンパンジーの免疫系や血液系、脳の構造は行動は、人間ととても類似している」等々、アフリカの森に生きるチンパンジーたちの先駆的な研究で知られるグドール氏。新ドキュメンタリー番組『ジェーンのきぼう（Jane Goodall: The Hope）』に先立って行われた電話会見で、「今のパンデミックについてどう考えるか？」と問われ、同氏は次のように答えています。

It is our disregard for nature and our disrespect of the animals we should share the planet with that has caused this pandemic that was predicted long ago.

（われわれが自然を無視し、地球を共有すべき動物たちを軽視したことが起因して、このパンデミックが発生しました。これは何年も前から予想されてきたことでした）

Because as we destroy, let’s say the forest, the different species of animals in the forest are forced into a proximity and therefore diseases are being passed from one animal to another, and that second animal is
then most likely to infect humans as it is forced into closer contact with humans.

（例えば、われわれが森を破壊すると、森にいるさまざまな種の動物が近接して生きていくことを強いられて、その結果、病気が動物から動物へと伝染します。そうすると今度は、病気をうつされた動物が人間と密接に接触するようになり、人間に伝染する可能性が高まるのです）

It’s also the animals who are hunted for food, sold in markets in Africa or in the meat market for wild animals in Asia, especially China, and our intensive farms where we cruelly crowd together billions of animals around the world. These are the conditions that create an opportunity for the viruses to jump from animals across the species barrier to humans.

（動物たちは、食用として狩られ、アフリカの市場やアジア地域、特に中国にある野生動物の食肉市場で販売されています。また、世界中にある集約農場には数十億匹の動物たちが残酷にも詰め込まれています。こうした条件下で、ウイルスが種の壁を越えて動物から人間に伝染する機会が生まれるのです）

　人間が生きようとすることが、結果的に人間以外の生き物たちの生活の場を奪うことになってしまう。ところが、その行動が最終的には人間にウィルスとして返ってくる。それは「やむを得ないことないか」、とあきらめの感情も湧いてきそうです。

　しかし、グドール氏は私たちに「希望」のメッセージを語ってくれます。

Everyone can make an impact every single day. If you think about the consequences of the little choices you make: what you eat, where it came from, did it cause cruelty to animals, is it made from intensive  farming– which mostly it is — is it cheap because of child slave labour, did it harm the environment in its production, where did it come from, how many miles did it travel, did you think that perhaps you could walk and not take your car.

（日々の小さな選択をする時にその選択がもたらす結果を考えるようにすれば、誰でも、毎日、影響を与えることができます。何を食べるか、その食べ物はどこから来たのか、その食べ物は動物を虐待して得られたものか、集約農業によって作られたものか（大抵の場合そうだが）、子どもの奴隷労働で作られたから安いのか、生産過程において環境に悪影響を及ぼしたか、どこから何マイル移動してきたのか、車ではなく徒歩で移動できないか）

　また、この「動物の軽視」の究極的な要因は「貧困」にあると指摘します。そ
の上で、貧困問題解決のための提言も忘れていません。

(Also consider) ways that you could perhaps help alleviate poverty because when people are poor they can’t make these ethical choices. They just have to do whatever they can to survive — they can’t question what they buy, they must buy the cheapest, and they are going to cut down the last tree because they are desperate to find land on which they can grow more food.

それから、貧しいとこういった倫理的な選択ができないため、どうすれば貧困を和らげられるのかも考えてほしいのです。貧しい人たちは生き延びるために、自分たちにできることをせざるを得ません。どれを買おうかと考える余裕はなく、最も安いものを買うだけです。食べ物をもっと栽培できる土地を必死に探し、最後の木を切り倒してしまうのです。

　「私たちが生活の中でできることは、皆少しずつ異なりますが、私たち誰もが変化を起こすことがでます」と、グドール氏は訴えています。

　自分はどんな変化を自分に起こすことができるのか、じっくりと考え、小さなことからでも行動に移して行きたいと思います。
