チママンダ・ンゴズィ・アディーチェさんは、ナイジェリア・イボ民族出身の作家。講演のタイトルは『The danger of a single story』（シングルストーリーの危険性）。「シングルストーリー」とは何を意味するのでしょうか。

　”The single story creates stereotypes. And the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”(シングルストーリーは固定観念を作り出します。固定観念の問題はそれらが事実ではないということではなく、不完全だと言うことです。ある話を”唯一の話”に変えてしまうのです。)

　アディーチェさんはアメリカの大学に通っていたとき、アメリカ人のルームメイトはアフリカに対してこんなシングルストーリを信じていました。それは「アフリカは悲劇に満ちた国」というシングルストーリーです。そして、その固定観念の裏側には、「だから、アフリカ人がアメリカ人である私の様になることは不可能だろう」という意識があったのでした。つまり人間として対等に見ていなかったのです。

　 　The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar.（シングルストーリーの結果は”人間の尊厳を奪う”のです。我々人間の平等の認識を困難にします。我々の類似点よりも、差異を強調します。） 　 　シングルストーリーは次のようにして作られて行くと、アディーチェさんは言います。 　 　”show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become.”((シングルストーリーは)一つの事を、唯一のものとして繰り返し人に見せることで、作られてゆくのです。) 　 　　日本に住む私たちも、このシングルストーリーの危険性に晒されているかもしません。例えば、新聞、テレビなど、大手マスコミからの情報のみを信じて暮す生き方です。
