イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の違い~ジェンマ先生
今日は、イギリス出身のジェンマ先生のお話しをお聞きします。
同僚に、英語を話している時は人格が変わりますね、といわれたことがあります。凄くハイテンションになるのだそうです。その原因は、もしかしたらジェンマ先生が指摘する、アメリカ英語とイギリス英語の表現方法の違いにあるのかもしれません。
But for example, I was teaching this guy from a book. It’s all about in a business situation, as I say, in Japan you are more humble, you wouldn’t, it would be rare for your boss to say, “oh, well done! You did a great job!” So I was teaching this text to this businessman, and I said to him actually I wouldn’t, I wouldn’t say “Oh I’m so great, you know, everyone go out for me”. I said actually we wouldn’t do that in England either. He said we wouldn’t do it Japan, because this is the American textbook. So I think I have…just strange, so. From business point of view, maybe there are more similarities between English and Japanese.
I would just say, “well done. Thanks for your hard work.” But in this book, it was “Great job. Well done! You, the best”. We never ever speak like that. And I just can imagine Japanese person do neither. That’s not natural, so. Do you see what I mean? It’s Cultural similarity.
