映画『Black Hawk Down』（ブラックホーク・ダウン）でアフリカ英語(ソマリア)

　1994年、ルワンダで「大量虐殺」が行われた際に、米国国務省は “genocide”(大量虐殺)という言葉は使わず、 “acts of genocide”(大量虐殺”的”行為)というはなはだ回りくどい表現を使いました。大量虐殺と認めてしまうと、米国は平和維持活動としての行動を起こさなければなりませんでした。しかし、その2年前、米国軍によるソマリアでの平和維持活動での失敗がそれを難しくしていました。
　90年代、ソマリアでは何が起こっていたのでしょうか。映画『Black Hawk Down』の冒頭に、次のような解説がありました。

Years of warfare among rival clans causes famine on a biblical scale.
部族間の長年の抗争により全土に飢餓生じた

300,000 civilians die of starvation.
30万もの民間人が餓死した

最強の部族を率いるアイディード将軍は首都モガディシオを制圧

He seizes international food shipments, at the ports.
国際援助の食料を奪い飢餓を敵対部族への武器に利用した

The world responds. Behind a force of 20,00o U.S. Marines, food is delivered and order is restored.
国際世論が動き米国海兵隊2万人が出動。食料が配られ一旦は秩序が回復した。

April 1993、Aidid waits until the Marines withdraw, and then declares war on the remaining U.N. peacekeepers.
1993年4月海兵隊が撤退するのを待ち、アイディード将軍は国連平和維持軍に宣戦布告

In June, Aidid’s militia ambush and slaughter 24 Pakistani soldiers, and begin targeting American personnel.
6月、アイディードの民兵が国連パキスタン兵24人を虐殺、米国も攻撃対象となった

The mision was to take three weeks, but six weeks later Washington was growing impatient.
3週間の任務のはずだったが、6週間後事態は進展せず、米国政府は焦り始めた。

　米国軍はアイディード拉致に失敗し19人の兵士が死亡します。ソマリア人は1000人以上が亡くなりました。このオペレーションに参加したマット・エヴァーズマン二等軍曹は、戦闘で命を落とした仲間に向かって、次のように語りかけます。

A friend of mine asked me before I got here…
ここに来る前に友達に聞かれた

It was when we were all shipping out.
ソマリアに向かうときだ

He asked me:
こう言われた

“Why are you going to fight somebody else’s war?
なぜ他人の戦争を戦うんだ？

“What, do y’all think you’re heroes?”
英雄のつもりかって

I didn’t know what to say at the time… …but if he asked me again, I’d say no.
何も答えられなかったけど…　今なら違うって答える

I’d say there’s no way in hell.
絶対に違うって

Nobody asks to be a hero.
英雄になりたい奴はいない

It just sometimes turns out that way.
ただ結果としてなるだけだ
