Taxi for Sherlock Holmes.
SHERLOCK:
I didn’t order a taxi.
CABBIE:
Doesn’t mean you don’t need one.
SHERLOCK:
You’re the cabbie. The one who stopped outside Northumberland Street. It was you. Not your passenger.
CABBIE:
See? No one ever thinks about the cabbie. It’s like you’re invisible. Just the back of an ‘ead. Proper advantage for a serial killer.
SHERLOCK:
Is this a confession?
CABBIE:
Oh, yeah. I’ll tell you what else… If you call the coppers now, I won’t run. I’ll sit quiet, and they can take me down, I promise.
Basically glottal stop is the dropping of “T”, as well as.
So well I came from in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
We throw away the “H”s.
We throw away the “T”s also.
For instance, “a little bit of butter”.
It will be “liʔ”, “bi”, “a”, “buʔer”.
So all “T”s have gone.
What is in the place is nothing.
So the easiest way to describe how to do it is literally just to take them out, just to pretend, just say the word without them in there.
So “little”, “liʔ”, so you stop “li”, jump over the “T”s in “ʔ”. “li-le”
And “bit”, “bi”, just no ”T”, “bi”.
And we also don’t even say “of” anymore.
It just get the word to the “a”.
“li-le”, “bi”, “a”.
“Of” is just “a”, “a”, like a baby “a”.
“li-le”, “bi”, “a”, “bu-er”.
Q I felt like they are doing “hiccup”.
Yes, yeah, it is almost backwards.
So “li-le”, “bi”, “buʔer”.
It is, that’s how it is.
Q: Maybe to know this kind of, something like patterns is very helpfull.
Yes, Yes, Oh yeah.
Because most, I would say most English people drop the “H”, unless slightly well, well educated or teachers, or something like that.
Most people drop the “H”.
But the only the northern kind of languages start dropping the “T”s a lot.
Q: So glottal stop is not common word.
No, unless if you study English. Yes, like if you asked any person from Yorkshire.
“Are you aware that you constantly glottal stopping?”
They would like, “What? What’s a glo-al stop?”
“That! That is a glottal stop”.
